Islam in Nigeria
Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the Lord God might dwell among them. Psalm 66:18
Hello Brethren, I welcome you again to the eight month of this jubilee prayer for Nigeria; thanks for your participation so far, the Lord whom we serve and believe shall surprise you with a testimony before this year is over, in Jesus name. Every year, muslims all over the world observe a month of fasting and consecration, which they call Ramadan. Intercessors worldwide have also developed a strategy of prayer, whereby they choose this month of Ramadan to intercede for the salvation of muslims.
Members of the WWMIG have been doing this for some time now, but this year, we will not be able to do the exact thing that we have been doing. Our focus this year will be within the jubilee vision that we are bearing for Nigeria. Ramadan 2010 is from August 11 to September 9, (although we can still observe praying through Ramadan on individual basis) but our prayer about Islam in Nigeria will be this eight month (July 26 -August 22). One of the major problems in Nigeria today is the issue of Islam.
Many christians in the north have experienced lots of loss and damages as a result of persecution from radical muslims, there is no need to dwell much on this or the impact that this religion has had on our government, because you probably know more than I do. I know many are advocating for the separation of the northern states from Nigeria, as a solution (or part of the solution) to Nigeria's problems. While I am not saying it is, or it is not, I'm assuming that those of us who have served (or lived) in the north at anytime would see things differently. The question I always ask is this: what about the Christians in the north or those who need to be saved or discipled? Must we throw away the baby with the dirty water?
Moreover, I think we have come to a point in Nigeria where Islam is not only a problem of the north, but of the whole nation. When the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh requested from Moses not to cross over Jordan, but to settle in the land they desired, they were still required to cross over Jordan and fight with their brethren. It was only after the Lord had given rest to their brethren that Joshua released them to go back to their lands. (Joshua 22:1-4). Fighting with our brethren in the north is one of the reasons why we are praying this month, also the Lord has given us the mandate to subdue, replenish and fill the earth. Jesus died for all including muslims. His gift of salvation is for all men, including the rebellious as stated in our selected scripture (Psalm 66:18). His desire is to dwell among them also, but He is depending on my intercession and yours; may the Lord strengthen us to partner with Him this month as we focus on this critical aspect of our Jubilee prayer.
